SKINCARE101: What Every Beginner Needs To Know

SKINCARE 101: WHAT EVERY BEGINNER NEEDS TO KNOW

Everyone wants glowing skin, whether she is in their 40s or 20s. Glowing skin is not a myth; anyone can have that, but for that, you have to maintain a daily self-care routine.  Your skin's glow is directly connected to your health; if you're healthy physically and mentally, then your skin starts glowing eventually. Consistency is the only key; stick to your routine for several weeks before expecting visible results. But with so many products and routines, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. If you are new to skincare, this guide will help you build a solid foundation.

Why Skincare Matters

Skin is the largest organ of our body, which lines the outer layer of an organism. It is a first-line defence against infectious agents. Skin protects our body from the external environment. Consistent skincare helps to prevent issues like acne, premature ageing, wrinkles, dullness, and other skin conditions. Skincare is essential, not just for beauty but for maintaining overall skin health and preventing disease.

The 3-Step  Basic Skincare Routine

As a beginner, you just need to add these three basic steps to your daily skincare routine:

1. Cleanser

A gentle cleanser cleans and removes dirt, oil, makeup, dead skin particles, and impurities from the skin. Cleansers may contain active ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, and charcoal to target specific skin concerns such as acne, dullness, or pigmentation. Choosing the right cleanser depends on your skin type -

Oily/acne-prone skin: Gel or foaming cleanser

Dry/Sensitive skin: Creamy, fragrance-free cleanser

2. Moisturiser

A moisturiser hydrates the skin by supplying essential water and oils. It soothes skin texture and prevents skin irritation.  Daily moisturising your skin keeps hydration locked, which eventually prevents breakouts and acne.

Oily/acne-prone skin: Use gel-based moisturiser because they have a light texture and less oil

Dry/sensitive skin:  thick creamy moisturiser prevents dryness

3. Sunscreen

Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, which cause sunburn, premature ageing and skin cancer. Apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning routine on exposed skin, use 1/4 teaspoon for the face and reapply every 2-3 hours.

Know Your Skin Type

Identifying your skin type helps to choose the right products:

Normal skin: It is a balanced skin type, not too oily or dry

Oily skin: Shiny, more prone to acne

Dry skin: Tight, flaky and rough patches

Combination: oily only in the T-zone, meaning the nose and forehead area, dry elsewhere

Sensitive skin: red or itchy

What to Avoid as a Beginner

Focus on skincare tips that prioritise your skin health, not trends. As a beginner, don't use too many products at once; start with a simple skincare routine and maintain consistency to see results.  Harsh scrubs can damage your skin barrier, so don't exfoliate too much.

  Final Tips

  • Always do a patch test - apply a small amount of product behind your ear or on your waist to check for any reaction.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat skin-friendly food rich in antioxidants and vitamins
