Makeup  Through The Decades:  A DIY Time Travel

Ever wish you could step back in time, if only for a moment? Well, what if I  told you that you could—with makeup? From flapper glam to disco diva to grunge goddess, the evolution of beauty trends is like flipping through the pages of a cultural time capsule. So grab your brushes, powders, and palettes—let’s go on a DIY beauty time travel through the decades!



1970s: Bohemian Spirit Meets Disco Fever

In the 70s, the pop culture craze was at the top! Makeup was more natural during the day, and all-out glam at night.  Shimmer eyes and glossy lips define the Era.


DIY Look

Base: Go for a radiant, dewy finish and skip heavy powders—this look is all about that healthy, glowing skin.

Eyes: Use shimmer eyeshadows like metallic, gold, and blue colors. 
Eyeliner should be winged and fine, eyebrows must be firm.

Cheeks:  Apply bronzer and peach-toned blush to define cheekbones.

Lips: Keep it subtle with nude gloss, or go with glossy berry lips.


Must-Have Products: Bronzer, shimmer eyeshadow, nude/peach lip gloss, cream highlighter 




1980s: Bold and Bright 

The 80s were all about bigger, brighter, and bolder—from music to fashion, and especially makeup. This was the era where self-expression ruled, and the motto was: more is more.

DIY Look

Base: Matte foundation with strong contouring. 

Eyes: Think bold and electric—blue, purple, pink, or neon green eyeshadow. Layer them and go wild. Add eyeliner (top and bottom) and heavy mascara.

Cheeks: Bright blush was the decade’s signature. Apply from the apples of your cheeks up to the temples in shades like fuchsia or coral.

Lips: Electric pinks, bright reds, or orange lipstick, often with a matte or satin finish.

Must-Have Products: Colorful eyeshadow palette, hot pink blush, bold lipstick, heavy-duty mascara.



1990s: Cool and Grungy

The Era of supermodels! From grunge-inspired smudges to the nude lipped supermodel look, beauty was all about individuality and low key confidence. 90s brought a moodier aesthetic- brown lip liner, matte foundation and smudged eyeliner.

DIY Look

Base: Choose a matte finish foundation and conceal the eyes and blemishes. 

Eyes: The eyebrows are arched and thinner. Smudge black or dark brown liner on the upper and lower lash line, finish with mascara.

Cheeks: Use rose blush and no highlighter, look just like the matte skin.

Lips: firstly, line the lips with a dark brown lip liner and fill with a nude, brown, or mauve lipstick

Must Have Products: Matte foundation, thin brow pencil, neutral eyeshadow palette, and Brown lip liner. Add scrunchie and wear loop hearing to the look for extra touch.


2000s: Y2k Beauty and Frosted look

The Era was all about shimmer, gloss, and princess glam. Makeup was fun and flirtatious. The beauty industry was heavily influenced by pop culture. Everyone carried a lip gloss and roll-on body glitter in their bag.

DIY look

Base: Mix a drop of liquid highlighter with your foundation for a glowy base

Eyes: for frosty eyelids, use a shimmer cream or powder shadow over the lids. Brows should be thin and arched.

Lips: line your lips with rose line, and apply a frosted lipstick or clear gloss with shimmer

Must-have products: lip gloss, frosted eyeshadow,  and body glitter
